Awareness campaign

The majority of central line related air emboli reported in NSW occurred during line removal. In every one of these cases the patient being sat up was seen as a major contributing factor.

An effective awareness campaign, produced by experts from the field of marketing and advertising could be extremely useful in focussing staff on an important message. Perhaps a slogan similar in ilk to ‘slip, slop, slap’, or the ‘back to sleep’ campaign for sudden infant death syndrome. Maybe ‘Central Lines are Removed Supine’, with an excellent awareness campaign using the phrase and aimed at healthcare staff.

We are looking into obtaining the help of an advertising agency to create a brief animation that will be used as a screen saver on hospital computers.

We have discussed the idea with senior members of the Clinical Excellence Commission and will keep you posted on progress.
